On 26 June 1492, Captain Antoine de Ville, commissioned by Charles VIII of France, made the first ascent of Mont Aiguille (2,087 m) in the Vercors Pre-Alps, leading a group of men that included theking’s ladder-bearer and several clergymen. The climbing party scaled the vertical walls using ladders and ropes, reached the summit plateau, erected crosses and remained there for several days.
